About Us
The Canadian Rent Bank Coalition (CRBC) members come from not-for-profits, and post-secondary institutions. Our purpose is to foster a greater understanding about rent banks and their role as a homelessness prevention and housing stability intervention. We meet regularly to share information and resources, respond to common challenges, and participate in knowledge creation about rent banks.
The Canadian Rent Bank Coalition is a national group and does not provide loans. For resources that may be helpful if you are struggling with rent, check to see if there is a rent bank in your region.
About Rent Banks
What is a Rent Bank
Rent banks are a type of eviction prevention and housing stabilization program that provides no-interest loans, forgivable loans and/or grants to renters who need assistance paying rent or who even are behind on their utilities.
Who runs them
Usually operated by non-profit organizations with public and/or charitable funding, rent banks can prevent evictions, support renters in securing more appropriate or affordable units, and/or provide pathways to housing for people struggling to access housing.
What do they do
In addition to short-term financial support, rent banks also connect renters to support services that are focused on increasing housing stability over the longer term. These services could include referrals to debt consolidation, food banks, social assistance, and other community resources.
